Smooth Coated Otters are Tungabhadra River’s Apex predator. They are the largest otter species in Asia. These Otters are also known as Wild Water Dogs. Although adapted for water, Smooth Coated Otters are equally comfortable on land, hence are also classified as semi aquatic animals. They can travel long distance overland in search of suitable habitat. They play, rest, scrub & clean their bodies on sandy river banks & establish their dens under tree roots or among boulders. They are mainly found in fresh water areas. As per IUCN Red list Smooth Coated Otter is listed as vulnerable species. It is threatened by poaching, loss & destruction of wetlands. The Tungabhadra Otter Conservation Reserve, a 34 Km stretch of habitat along the Tungabhadra river is the country’s first Otter Reserve acknowledging the importance of this species of wildlife & to take necessary action to protect them before it’s too late.
